SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS & EVENTS 2012-2013

Club meetings are held at the Mobile Botanical Gardens, 5151 Museum Drive, Mobile, AL 36689, on the second Sunday of every month, starting September 2012, and ending in April 2013. Social Time begins at 2:00 PM, with the meetings beginning promptly at 2:30 PM.

v September 9, 2012  Planting and Growing Camellias in the Ground and in Pots- Members will discuss all aspects of  planting new camellias including soil preparation, planting mixes,  pot size, watering, and drip irrigation.

v September 22, 2012  Visit to Vernon Howell's Camellia Nursery--We will meet at Rocky Creek Catfish House at Noon and after lunch go to Vernon's.  Directions will be available at the September meeting and posted  on our web site. Directions are also printed on the back of this schedule. v .November 11, 2012  Camellias in Floral Arrangements--Vickie Baugh will coordinate a panel of camellia club members who will display floral arrangements, discuss techniques, and design styles.

v December 9, 2012 Christmas Party/ Auction - Jim Oates, our Master Auctioneer, will conduct this part of the program. There will be no formal meeting; this will be a time to enjoy our fellow club members. The club will provide the holiday meats, potatoes and gravy for our annual buffet. Members will provide the side dishes and desserts.

v January 13, 2013 Planning for the Annual Camellia Show/ Mini-Show - Members are encouraged to bring blooms and learn the procedures for entering their blooms. All facets of the operation of the show will be discussed.  Bring a wish list of the scions you would like other members to bring to the February meeting.

v January 19-20, 2013 ANNUAL CAMELLIA SHOW - COLONIAL BEL AIR MALL - There will be a Judges' Welcoming Reception on Friday night January 18, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the Mobile Botanical Gardens. 

v February 10, 2013 Camellia Propagation There will be something for everyone: grafting; air-layering; rooting; and growing camellias from seed.

v February 24, 2013 Garden Tour -. Vickie Baugh, our tour organizer, will announce the time and place of our club’s annual tour prior to this date.

v March 10, 2013 Bobby Green of Green Nurseries Will Discuss Camellia Growing and  The Camellia Sansanquas That He Has Developed- Bobby is one of  the foremost suppliers of camellias to the nursery industry and a major developer of new sasanqua varieties. 

v April 14,  2013 Photo Contest/Annual Election of Officers and   Taking Care of Your Camellias- Experts will advise on pruning, fertilizing, spraying etc. so your prize plants will come through the next months happily. Members are encouraged to discuss their own successes and seek help for their problem plants.. Members are encouraged to bring their best photos for this four-part member-judged photo contest: 1) Best Camellia Bloom; 2) Best Camellia in the Landscape; 3) Best Camellia with People or Animals; 4) Best Camellia in a Floral Arrangement. All Photos submitted must be new photos from this camellia season. Annual Election and results to follow.
