2007 CHRISTMAS
& CAMELLIAS
PARTY! Our
December 9th Meeting will be our annual Christmas Party held at the Mobile
Botanical Gardens beginning at 2:00 p.m. All
the festive meats,
dressing and gravy will be provided by the Club and the traditional
accompaniments by all Club members. If
you haven’t contacted our
catering chief Eileen Dwyer, call her on 251-988-1405 and she will be glad to
let you know if there is anything still needed to complete our
Christmas meal. We’re also having
an Auction of special camellia plants, so bring money or your check book and get
that super present for
that special someone. Looking
forward to seeing everyone on the ninth.... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOOD GATHERING FOR TEA PARTY We had almost a
full house at the Botanical Gardens for the November Meeting, don’t know if it
was the program or the food that drew the crowd, but both
were excellent. Donnie Barrett gave
an informative talk on growing tea, which he currently does as a hobby - with
his great enthusiasm if he
takes it up full-time when he retires, Fairhope will probably become the
tea-producing center of North America! The
food was delicious as
was the tea that Donnie brought for us to taste.
Our thanks go to Ray & Kay Calloway who arranged the program and to Eileen Dwyer and
her band of tireless helpers who got members to bring all the food. it was
really nice to have china plates and cups for our tea party.
Note: Only
56 people signed in at the Meeting ( this includes the names of members
that the Secretary knew were there
& who had not signed in)
- there were about 70 persons present so please, pretty please, remember to sign
in at each meeting. It will be a
big help to the Club
Secretary in maintaining accurate records, ta everso much! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAMELLIA SHOWS.... The Pensacola
Camellia Club will be having its 70th Show this weekend, 8th & 9th of
December, at the Wright Place on Wright Street in down- town Pensacola.
This is always a really good Show and since they are the oldest Camellia
Club in the nation, let’s show our support by entering some
blooms(before 11 a,m, on the 8th) or by visiting the show (open to the public
after 2 p.m.). Hear they will have some nice plants for sale as
well. See you there! The Mississippi
Gulf Coast Camellia Club held their Show in November and they were pleased to
see 12 members of the Camellia Club of Mobile participating by entering blooms
and judging the entries. There were
a lot of gorgeous blooms - Walter Creighton’s “Adorable” was an
out-of-this-world beauty. DON’T FORGET -
GROOM YOUR BLOOMS FOR OUR SHOW
ON JANUARY 19 & 20,
2008. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAMELLIA CHAT The proposed
Camellia Garden & Walk in Foley
has got off to a rousing start. Nine
members of the Club participated in a planting day on Thursday, November
29. They removed grass. made beds,
amended and tilled the soil and got 17 good-sized plants into the ground.
Ray Calloway (who
chairs this project) arranged for a great selection of plants to be obtained
from Glenn Read’s Nursery in Mississippi, Elaine &
Jim Smelley donated two hard-to-find plants, plus Bobby Green of Fairhope
has generously offered us “whatever you need”! The City of Foley
provided a huge truck full of lovely compost, plus a watering truck for the
planting day. All very
well-organized, thanks to Ray Calloway.
Another planting day is planned shortly, Vera Curry has a list of the
cultivars we have so far. The City
of Foley is providing the signs for each
plant, of the same quality as those in the recently completed Rose Walk just
north of the Camellia Walk. People
strolling by during the
planting seemed thrilled at the prospect of a display celebrating the state
flower. A local project the Club can be proud of. If you are looking
for a nice little camellia book, try to find “Success with Camellias” ISBN 1
85391 312 X. This is only a small
book, but packed with info,
plus a lot of pictures. It is a
paperback book. Vera Curry will
bring a copy of it to the December meeting for you to see. Don’t forget, we
still have a few of the latest Nomenclature books, plus some of the Supplements
with all the old varieties listed. A friend of mine,
not noted for her green thumb, planted a rock garden, and three of them died!
