6 JANUARY 2008 - GARDEN TOUR - JAMES & Eileen Dwyer

The first of our three Garden Tours for this camellia season will be at James & Eileen Dwyer’s home on Sunday, January 6.  This will be a most interesting tour since you will discover a large collection of species camellias, not just japonicas and sasanquas, plus many fragrant varieties as well.  The tour will begin at 1:30 p.m. at l4040 Riverside Drive, Foley.  Driving directions as follows:  Go south on Hwy 98, past Fairhope, road will make a left turn at an intersection, continue on Hwy 98 toward Foley.  Cross Fish River Bridge, at first main road turn left, this will be County Road l7.  Go past Pitcher Plant Bog (on left). At the end of Co. Rd 17 (about 1.2 miles) go left on Island Drive, after 200 feet turn right on Riverside Drive, Dwyer home is on the right.  If you get lost, call 251-988-1405 and Jim or Eileen will direct you.  Don’t miss this tour, it is still a young camellia garden but very well worth a visit to see many camellias you will not find elsewhere.

13 JANUARY 2008 - CLUB MEETING  & MINI-SHOW

This is one of the most important Meetings of our camellia season - we will be getting ready for our really big Show on the following weekend at Colonial Mall Bel Air in Mobile.  Walter Creighton, 2008 Show Chairman, will tell us what needs to be done to make this event successful. There will be something for everyone who wants to participate in one of the biggest and best camellia shows in the South, you can help for a  short while, or for several hours, it is up to you.  We do have a lot of fun and are very proud of the results of our efforts.  Do try to bring blooms to exhibit, we have 3 special categories for novice entrants who have never won an award before, we’ve also a special section for Alabama Growers of the Camellia Club of Mobile.  Here’s a tip for those of you who’ve seen the gorgeous blooms grown by Jim & Elaine Smelley and Walter Creighton - they only exhibit in the protected section - so you won’t be competing against them if you’ve been growing your camellias out-of-doors and unprotected!!

A Mini-Show is planned for this meeting so you will know what the judges are looking for in an award-winning bloom, how to fill in your exhibitor’s card, how to display your bloom to its best advantage, where to put your entry on the exhibitors tables, etc.  So bring some  blooms - only five, please - and enjoy a little light-hearted competition.  This Mini-Show will be judged by our members who are ACS fully accredited Camellia Show Judges.  As usual the Meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. with a social half-hour before being called to order at 2:30.

The Camellia Club of Mobile will be holding its 68th Camellia Show at Colonial Mall Bel Air on the above dates.   Persons wishing to exhibit blooms should have them there between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19.   The Show will be open to the public from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. that day, and from noon until 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 20.   All members are encouraged to participate, by helping to run the Show and/or entering blooms.  We normally have over 2,000 blooms on exhibit, and more than that number of visitors to see the Show.

All members are invited to attend the pre-show Judges Reception that is held by the Club for all the Judges who have agreed to participate in adjudicating our Show.  This will be held at the Ramada Hotel  near Colonial Mall Bel Air -(just down the I-65 service road from the old Sam’s store).  Food and beverages provided by Club members will be available, this is a very pleasant social gathering and you will meet camellia enthusiasts and judges from all over the south-east U.S.
