Camellia Club of Mobile Newsletter Volume III Issue 3___ ____________________________________December 2006 COME CELEBRATE CAMELLIAS AND CHRISTMAS Our Club will be having its annual Christmas Party at our next Meeting which will be held as usual at the Mobile Botanical Gardens. Date is December 10th and the festivities will begin after a very short business meeting. All members will be bringing something for the meal and the Club will be providing all the turkey, ham and dressing. If you are not sure what to bring, or what is still needed, do contact Eileen Dwyer at 988-1405 as soon as possible. A new exciting feature of this traditional Party will be an auction of special camellia plants, just in time for giving (or receiving) a really nice present, proceeds of the auction will be for the benefit of the Club. We look forward to seeing you there, the Christmas Meeting is always an enjoyable social gathering. Camellia Slide Show a Popular Program The November Meeting was very well attended with over fifty members present, mainly due to Elaine Smelley’s annual slide presentation of camellia blooms. She showed us lovely pictures of old favorites, new cultivars and some very beautiful ones that are in the process of being named. Elaine also initiated the Club’s new audio system, purchased by President George Davis at the request of the Club’s Governing Board. Elaine handled the new microphone very professionally and several comments were made that being able to hear the speaker clearly, no matter where you sat, was a vast improvement. Our thanks, as usual , to Elaine for a great program. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In Memoriam We sadly report the passing in November of Mrs. Janie Godwin, much loved mother of Laura Barnard. Many members will remember meeting Miss Janie at our Shows over the past years, she really appreciated our favorite flower and was proud of her son-in-law Barney Barnard’s expertise in growing them. We recall making her laugh by telling her that Barney’s camellias were so good because of the excellent holes that her daughter Laura dug for them! Several Club members, including two Board Members attended the visitation in Atmore. Our sympathy goes out to Laura and Barney in the loss of such a nice lady. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GARDEN TOURS After the success of the tours of several members’ gardens last year, it was decided to plan at least three tours for this season.
